Why Saltmark

What working with a small,
focused consultancy looks like.

The advantages here are not about scale. They are about what becomes possible when consulting is designed for one type of client and one type of need.

At a Glance

Six things that matter if you are considering this work.

Scoped from the start

The fee and the scope are agreed before anything begins. There is no discovery phase that expands into a longer contract.

Written follow-through

Every conversation ends with a document. A note, a summary, a prompt sheet — something the owner can read, share internally, or return to six months later.

Listening before advising

We do not arrive with a model to present. We arrive with questions and stay focused on what the owner is actually dealing with.

Sized for your business

The work is designed for companies with ten to eighty people — not for large organisations with full HR departments.

Confidential as standard

A confidentiality agreement is part of every engagement. The conversations you have with us remain private.

Respectful of your hours

The engagements are short and end when the work is done. We do not lengthen a project to fill more time.

In More Depth

What each of these looks like in practice.

Expertise in People Conversations

Professional experience

Saltmark's consultants have worked alongside owner-managers in Malaysia for over a decade. The specific expertise is in the conversational and operational dimensions of people work — not employment law or payroll, but the preparation and structure of the human conversations that shape a team over time.

The situations we work on most often — strategy conversations, founder departures, long-service recognition — recur across different businesses in recognisable patterns. That pattern recognition is useful. It means we can listen to a specific situation and connect it to what we have seen work well in comparable ones.

A Clear, Predictable Process

How each engagement runs

Every engagement follows a consistent shape: an initial call to confirm fit, a written brief outlining what will happen and what will be produced, the consulting sessions themselves, and a final written output. Nothing starts until the scope is confirmed and the fee is agreed.

This structure is deliberate. Owner-managers are busy. A process that is clear and contained is easier to fit into a working month than one that is open-ended. The predictability of the shape is itself part of the value.

A Considered Client Experience

How we treat your time

Saltmark carries a small number of active engagements at any time. This is deliberate — it means each client receives full attention. We do not hand work off between consultants mid-engagement, and we do not reschedule conversations for minor reasons.

Responses to messages are typically within one business day. If something outside our scope comes up during an engagement, we say so clearly and, where possible, point the owner toward someone who can help with that part.

Transparent, Fixed Pricing

No surprises on invoices

All three engagements are fixed-fee. The prices shown on the Solutions page are the prices charged. There are no additional consulting hours, no retainer agreements, and no extras billed after the fact. If additional work is needed, that is a separate conversation with a separate scope and fee.

The pricing reflects the contained nature of the work — a half-day conversation is a half-day conversation. Owners running small businesses in Malaysia need to know what they are spending before they commit, and we think that is a reasonable expectation.

How We Compare

Saltmark versus typical alternatives.

Typical People Operations Firms

  • Designed for organisations with dedicated HR functions
  • Open-ended retainers that can run for months without a clear endpoint
  • Written outputs are lengthy reports that take time to read and use
  • Multiple consultants involved — not always the same face across sessions
  • Pricing based on hours, which can be difficult to predict in advance
  • Scope tends to expand once engagement has begun

Saltmark

  • Built specifically for owner-managers in smaller businesses
  • Each engagement has a defined endpoint before it starts
  • Written outputs are short, readable, and practical — not reports
  • The same consultant throughout — continuity of listening
  • Fixed fee per engagement, agreed before anything begins
  • Scope is contained and does not expand without a separate agreement

What Makes This Different

Three things you will not find elsewhere.

Engagements sized for real owner schedules

The longest single engagement is a half-day. The co-founder and long-service engagements are spread over multiple short sessions. None of this requires you to clear a week from your calendar.

Written prompt sheets for owner-led conversations

Some of the most important conversations happen when we are not in the room. The prompt sheets we write are designed to help an owner hold a conversation on their own — with the right questions, in the right order.

Honest about what is outside our scope

If the situation you bring to us requires legal advice, financial counsel, or licensed professional involvement, we will tell you that clearly and refer you on. We do not try to extend our scope to capture more of the work.
